Safety in the smart EQ fortwo.

The active and passive safety systems.

Passive safety.

tridion safety cell.

The tridion safety cell also forms the core of smart's innovative safety concept, should an accident occur.

High-voltage battery.

The safety concept for the high-voltage battery has been developed to ensure that the occupants do not come into contact with high voltage. A separate, conventional on-board electrical system with a 12 V car battery, shock-proof plugs and continuous monitoring by a dedicated 12 V interlock circuit are employed to this end. In the event of an accident, the high-voltage elements will be deactivated, depending on the severity of impact. In addition, the battery is accommodated in a robust frame in the underbody.

Airbags.

In addition to airbags for driver and front passenger, the models come with a knee airbag for the driver, side airbags for driver and front passenger, as well as a window airbag.

Active safety.

Active Brake Assist.

If the radar sensors detect a risk of collision with the vehicle ahead at a speed of over 30 km/h, the Assist function will alert you with a warning tone. Should the driver fail to brake or initiate evasive manoeuvres despite the warning, slight braking is initiated autonomously. If the driver responds by braking, they will be assisted in their emergency braking.

Crosswind Assist.

In strong crosswinds, standard-fit Crosswind Assist detects any impairments to straight-line stability and specifically brakes individual wheels so you can reduce your counter-steer input.
